Assist-to-Turnover Ratio (AST/TO)
The number of assists a player records for every turnover committed.
The assist-to-turnover ratio measures how well a player takes care of the basketball while creating scoring opportunities for teammates.
How to Calculate
AST/TO = Total Assists / Total Turnovers
A ratio of 2.0 means the player records two assists for every turnover. A ratio above 2.0 is generally considered strong ball handling and decision-making.
Why It Matters
This ratio is especially useful for evaluating point guards and primary ball handlers. A player who gets 8 assists but commits 7 turnovers is creating opportunities but also giving away too many possessions. The ratio puts both numbers in context.
Age-Appropriate Expectations
Younger players will naturally have lower assist-to-turnover ratios as they develop their ball handling and court vision. Track improvement over the season rather than comparing to professional benchmarks. For U16 and above, a ratio above 1.5 is a positive sign.
Coaching Applications
If a player's ratio is declining, it may signal that they are being asked to handle too much of the playmaking responsibility, or that opponents have figured out their tendencies. Use this as a conversation starter about decision-making, not as a judgment of the player's ability.
