A player's average number of blocks per game, showing shot-blocking ability and rim protection.
Blocks Per Game (BPG)
Blocks Per Game, or BPG, measures a player's average number of blocked shots per game. A block occurs when a defender legally deflects an opponent's shot attempt, preventing it from reaching the basket. BPG is a key indicator of a player's shot-blocking ability, rim protection, and defensive presence in the paint.
Calculation: BPG = Total Blocks / Number of Games Played
Why it Matters: High BPG players deter opponents from attacking the basket, forcing them to take less efficient shots from the perimeter. Effective shot-blockers protect the rim, alter shots, and grab important rebounds, improving team defense. Blocks can change momentum and ignite the crowd.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Identify rim protectors who can anchor your team's defense.
- Adjust defensive schemes to maximize players' shot-blocking abilities.
- Evaluate opponents' offensive tendencies and focus on attacking players less likely to get their shots blocked.
- Encourage players to develop proper blocking technique and timing. Stress the importance of blocking shots cleanly and avoiding fouls. A player may get more blocks by avoiding foul trouble.
