Double Dribble

A violation where a player dribbles the ball, stops, then dribbles again, or dribbles with both hands at the same time.

A double dribble is a fundamental basketball violation. It occurs when a player ends their dribble by catching or stopping the ball in their hands, and then starts dribbling again, or when a player dribbles the ball with both hands simultaneously. Once a player stops dribbling, they can only pass or shoot; resuming the dribble constitutes a double dribble.

Why It Matters

Eliminating double dribbles is important for maintaining possession and advancing the ball effectively. A double dribble results in a turnover, handing possession to the opposing team. Consistent double dribbles can indicate a lack of ball-handling skills, impacting a player's confidence and effectiveness on the court.

How Coaches Can Use It

Coaches should prioritize teaching proper dribbling techniques to avoid double dribbles. This includes emphasizing control over the ball, avoiding stopping the dribble unnecessarily, and dribbling with one hand at a time. Drills focusing on ball control, change of pace, and maintaining vision while dribbling are effective. Incorporate game-like scenarios in practice where players must make quick decisions about when to dribble, pass, or shoot to reinforce good habits. Provide immediate feedback when players commit double dribbles, explaining the error and demonstrating the correct technique. Use video analysis to show players examples of correct and incorrect dribbling techniques.
