Help Defense
Defensive positioning and rotation to assist a teammate who has been beaten by the ball handler.
Help defense refers to the defensive principle of providing support and assistance when a teammate's assignment gains an advantage. It is one of the most important concepts in team defense.
How Help Defense Works
When the ball handler beats their defender off the dribble, the nearest help defender rotates to stop the drive. This creates a chain reaction: the player who rotated needs someone to cover their assignment, and so on. This chain of rotations is called "help and recover" or "rotation defense."
Help Side Positioning
Defenders whose player is two or more passes away from the ball should position themselves in "help side" position, roughly between their player and the basket. This allows them to see both their assignment and the ball, and to be ready to help if the ball handler drives.
Teaching Help Defense
The most common coaching phrase is "see ball, see man." Every defender should be able to see both the basketball and the player they are guarding at all times. This requires constant head movement and awareness.
Common Mistakes
The biggest help defense error is helping too late or not at all. The second most common mistake is helping but not recovering back to the original assignment after the ball is stopped. Tracking defensive rotations through game film is an effective way to identify and correct these issues.
