Rebounds Per Game (RPG)
Rebounds Per Game, or RPG, quantifies a player's average number of rebounds secured in each game. Rebounds are critical for gaining and maintaining possession of the basketball. RPG reflects a player's effort, positioning, and ability to secure the ball after a missed shot. There are offensive rebounds (securing the ball after your team's missed shot) and defensive rebounds (securing the ball after the opponent's missed shot).
Calculation: RPG = Total Rebounds / Number of Games Played
Why it Matters: RPG demonstrates a player's commitment to rebounding, which directly impacts a team's ability to control possession. High RPG players provide second-chance opportunities on offense and prevent the opponent from doing the same on defense. Strong rebounding teams are more likely to win games.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Identify strong rebounders for specific roles (offensive rebounding specialist, defensive rebounding anchor).
- Evaluate team rebounding performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Adjust playing time based on rebounding effectiveness. Some players may have lower RPG but generate more contested rebounds.
- Develop rebounding drills and strategies to improve team RPG. Teach players proper boxing-out techniques and positioning.
