Shot Contest

A shot contest is a defensive action where a defender attempts to disrupt an offensive player's shot by raising a hand or jumping near the shooter. The aim is to reduce the shooter's accuracy and make the shot more difficult.

Mechanics:

  • The defender quickly closes the distance to the shooter.
  • The defender raises a hand (without fouling) to obstruct the shooter's vision and alter their shot trajectory.
  • The defender may jump to further contest the shot but must land safely and avoid contact.

Why it Matters:

A good shot contest can significantly decrease the shooter's field goal percentage. Even a slight contest can be enough to alter the shot and cause a miss. Consistently contesting shots is important for strong team defense.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Encourage players to contest every shot.
  • Teach players the proper technique for contesting shots without fouling, emphasizing high hands and controlled movements.
  • Drill shot-contesting skills regularly during practice.
  • Analyze game film to identify areas where shot contesting can be improved. Consider how close the contest was, or how it affected the shot.
  • Remind your players to stay down on pump fakes.
