Tempo

The pace at which a team plays, measured by the number of possessions per game.

Tempo refers to the speed at which a team plays, typically measured by the number of possessions a team uses per game (or per 40 minutes to normalize across different game lengths).

Fast Tempo

A fast-tempo team pushes the ball in transition, takes quick shots, and tries to create as many possessions as possible. This style benefits teams with superior athletes, good depth on the bench, and players who make quick decisions.

Slow Tempo

A slow-tempo team methodically runs set plays, works for the best possible shot, and tries to limit the total number of possessions. This style benefits teams with disciplined players, good half-court offense, and fewer available substitutes.

Controlling Tempo

Teams can influence the pace of the game through several tactics: pressing or trapping to speed up the opponent, using shot clock management (at levels where a shot clock exists), controlling the boards to prevent fast breaks, and choosing when to push in transition versus setting up in the half-court.

How to Use Tempo Data

Tracking your team's tempo across games helps coaches understand their natural pace and determine whether they perform better at faster or slower speeds. This data can also inform scouting reports, as some opponents may be significantly weaker when forced to play at an uncomfortable pace.
