Assists Per Game (APG)
A player's average assists per game, measuring playmaking and contribution to team scoring.
Assists Per Game (APG)
Assists Per Game, or APG, indicates a player's average number of assists in each game. An assist is credited to a player who passes the ball to a teammate, leading directly to a score. APG highlights a player's playmaking ability and their contribution to team scoring through passing. It is an important indicator of court vision and unselfish play.
Calculation: APG = Total Assists / Number of Games Played
Why it Matters: APG reflects a player's ability to create scoring opportunities for teammates. High APG players improve team efficiency and offensive flow. APG indicates a player's awareness, passing skills, and understanding of offensive schemes.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Identify primary playmakers on your team.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of different offensive sets and player combinations.
- Encourage teamwork and ball movement by emphasizing assist numbers. Some high APG can be misleading if a player over dribbles or has a high turnover percentage.
- Scout opponents' playmakers and devise strategies to limit their assist numbers. For example, a player who often assists on pick-and-rolls might be forced to pass to different options through defensive positioning.
