Turnover Percentage (TOV%)

Estimated percentage of team possessions ending in a turnover when a player is on the court.

Turnover Percentage (TOV%)

Turnover Percentage, or TOV%, estimates the percentage of a player's or team's possessions that end in a turnover. A turnover occurs when a team loses possession of the ball to the opposing team without attempting a field goal. TOV% reflects a player's or team's ball security and decision-making. A lower TOV% is generally desirable, indicating better ball control.

Calculation: TOV% = Turnovers / (Field Goal Attempts + 0.44 * Free Throw Attempts + Turnovers)

Why it Matters: TOV% indicates how effectively a player or team protects the ball. High TOV% can limit scoring opportunities and give the opponent extra possessions. Low TOV% usually leads to more shot attempts and, potentially, more points.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Identify players who are prone to turnovers and work on improving their ball-handling skills and decision-making.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of different offensive sets and strategies by monitoring TOV%.
  • Track player development by monitoring TOV% trends over time.
  • Emphasize the importance of ball security in practice and games.
  • Analyze opponent's turnover rate. Knowing the opponent's TOV% can help a coach identify areas where they can pressure the ball and create turnovers.
