Usage Rate (USG%)
Estimate of possessions a player uses while on the court, reflecting their involvement in the offense.
Usage Rate (USG%)
Usage Rate, or USG%, is an estimate of the percentage of team possessions a player uses while on the court. A possession is considered 'used' if a player shoots the ball, turns the ball over, or gets to the free throw line. USG% indicates a player's involvement in the team's offensive actions. High USG% typically means the player is a focal point of the offense.
Calculation: USG% = 100 * ((FGA + (0.44 * FTA) + TO) * (MP / TeamMP)) / (TeamFGA + (0.44 * TeamFTA) + TeamTO)
Where: FGA = Field Goal Attempts FTA = Free Throw Attempts TO = Turnovers MP = Minutes Played TeamMP = Team Minutes Played TeamFGA = Team Field Goal Attempts TeamFTA = Team Free Throw Attempts TeamTO = Team Turnovers
Why it Matters: USG% helps coaches understand a player's role in the offense. It can identify players who are overused or underused, potentially leading to adjustments in offensive strategies.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Balance the offensive workload by distributing possessions among players effectively.
- Optimize player matchups by considering their usage rates.
- Adjust the offensive system to highlight the strengths of players with appropriate usage rates.
- Determine whether a player's efficiency matches their usage rate. A high-usage player should ideally have above-average efficiency. If a player with a high USG% has a low shooting percentage, adjustments may need to be made.
