Offensive Rating (ORtg)

Offensive Rating (ORtg)

Offensive Rating, or ORtg, estimates the number of points a team or player scores per 100 possessions. Unlike points per game, ORtg adjusts for pace of play, allowing for a more accurate comparison of offensive efficiency across different teams and eras. A higher ORtg indicates a more efficient offense.

Calculation: There are various formulas for calculating ORtg, but a common simplified version is:

ORtg = (Points / Possessions) * 100

Where: Possessions = Field Goal Attempts + 0.44 * Free Throw Attempts + Turnovers - Offensive Rebounds

Why it Matters: ORtg provides a standardized measure of offensive efficiency that is independent of pace. It allows coaches to compare the effectiveness of their offense against different opponents, in different game situations, and over time. It is important for understanding how well a team converts its possessions into points.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of different offensive schemes and player combinations.
  • Identify areas for improvement in the team's offensive execution.
  • Compare the team's offensive performance against different opponents.
  • Track player development by monitoring ORtg trends over time.
  • Analyze specific sets. A coach might run a play and then determine the offensive rating of when that play is run. If the ORtg is low, then it might be reevaluated.
