Defensive Rating (DRtg)
Points allowed per 100 possessions, showing defensive efficiency separate from pace.
Defensive Rating (DRtg)
Defensive Rating, or DRtg, estimates the number of points a team or player allows per 100 possessions. It's the defensive counterpart to Offensive Rating and, like ORtg, it adjusts for pace of play. A lower DRtg indicates a more efficient defense.
Calculation: Similar to ORtg, there are various formulas. DRtg is complex to calculate accurately without advanced statistical models. Common metrics use points allowed per possession and adjust for strength of schedule.
DRtg = (Opponent Points / Possessions) * 100
Where: Possessions = Opponent Field Goal Attempts + 0.44 * Opponent Free Throw Attempts + Opponent Turnovers - Opponent Offensive Rebounds
Why it Matters: DRtg provides a standardized measure of defensive efficiency that is independent of pace. It allows coaches to compare the effectiveness of their defense against different opponents, in different game situations, and over time.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Evaluate the effectiveness of different defensive schemes and player combinations.
- Identify areas for improvement in the team's defensive execution (e.g., rebounding, preventing penetration).
- Compare the team's defensive performance against different opponents and strategies.
- Track player development by monitoring DRtg trends over time.
- Analyze the defensive impact of individual players and their contributions to the team's overall defensive performance. Some players may look like good defenders by getting steals and blocks, but actually harm defensive rating due to over-aggressiveness.
