Net Rating

The difference between a team's offensive and defensive ratings, showing overall performance.

Net Rating

Net Rating is the difference between a team's Offensive Rating (ORtg) and Defensive Rating (DRtg). It represents the point differential per 100 possessions. Net Rating provides an overall assessment of a team's performance, considering both offensive and defensive efficiency. A positive Net Rating suggests a team is outscoring its opponents, while a negative Net Rating suggests the opposite.

Calculation: Net Rating = Offensive Rating (ORtg) - Defensive Rating (DRtg)

Why it Matters: Net Rating offers a more comprehensive evaluation of a team's strength than simply looking at win-loss record. It adjusts for the pace of play and focuses on the efficiency of both the offense and defense. It can be a strong predictor of future success.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Evaluate the overall performance of the team.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in the team's offensive and defensive systems.
  • Compare the team's performance against different opponents.
  • Monitor team improvement over time.
  • Use it to guide decision-making in game strategy, player substitutions, and training focuses. If a team is getting high offensive ratings but low defensive ratings, for example, that dictates the coaching focus for future practices. If a team has a high net rating with a certain lineup, you can utilize that information in-game.
