Euro Step

An offensive move where a player takes a sideways step to avoid a defender while driving to the basket.

Euro Step

The Euro step is an offensive move used by a player driving to the basket to evade a defender. It involves taking one step in one direction, then quickly stepping in the opposite direction, often changing the player's angle of attack and throwing off the defender's timing.

How to Execute:

  1. Dribble towards the basket, approaching the defender.
  2. Take a wide step to one side, shifting your body weight in that direction.
  3. Immediately follow with a step in the opposite direction, often towards the basket.
  4. Maintain balance and control throughout the move.
  5. Finish with a layup or floater.

Why it Matters:

The Euro step allows players to avoid charging fouls, create separation from defenders, and finish at the basket from difficult angles. It requires coordination and timing.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Teach players the importance of timing and spacing when executing the Euro step.
  • Emphasize maintaining balance and control throughout the move.
  • Incorporate Euro step drills into layup and driving practice.
  • Focus on making sure players gather the ball prior to initiating the steps or it will be a travel.
