Hedge
A defensive technique used in pick-and-roll coverage where the defender guarding the screener briefly steps out.
Hedge
A hedge is a defensive technique commonly used to defend against pick-and-roll situations. The defender guarding the screener briefly steps out towards the ball handler to impede their progress and allow the on-ball defender time to recover.
Mechanics:
- As the screener makes contact with the on-ball defender, the defender guarding the screener quickly steps out towards the ball handler.
- The hedging defender shows their presence, forcing the ball handler to slow down or change direction.
- The hedging defender then quickly recovers back to their original assignment.
Why it Matters:
Hedging prevents the ball handler from getting a clear path to the basket after the screen, disrupts their momentum, and gives the on-ball defender time to fight over or go under the screen. It’s more aggressive than playing ‘drop’ coverage.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Teach players the proper timing and angle for hedging.
- Emphasize the importance of quick recovery back to the original assignment.
- Adjust the hedging strategy based on the ball handler's skill set and the game situation. Aggressive hedges are better against scoring guards. Softer hedges work to contain.
- Communicate the hedging plan clearly to all players on the court.
