Hook Shot

A shot thrown with one arm extended away from the body, using a sweeping, arcing motion to release the ball.

Hook Shot

The hook shot is a classic offensive move, typically employed by post players near the basket. It involves extending one arm away from the body and releasing the ball with a sweeping, arcing motion, making it difficult for defenders to block. It relies on skill and touch, not necessarily athleticism.

How to Execute:

  1. Position yourself near the basket, typically on the low block.
  2. Establish a strong base with your feet, facing towards or slightly angled away from the basket.
  3. Extend one arm (usually the one further from the defender) away from your body.
  4. Sweep your arm upwards in a semi-circular motion, releasing the ball at the peak of the arc.
  5. Use your fingertips to guide the ball and impart backspin for a soft touch.

Why it Matters:

The hook shot is difficult to defend because the shooter's body protects the ball from the defender. It is an effective way to score in the paint, especially against taller or more athletic opponents.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Teach players the importance of proper footwork and body positioning.
  • Emphasize extending the arm fully and using a smooth, sweeping motion.
  • Incorporate hook shot drills into post play practice.
  • Focus on developing a soft touch and consistent release point.
