Pump Fake
A pump fake, also known as a shot fake, is a fundamental offensive move used to deceive a defender into thinking a shot is being attempted. The purpose is to get the defender to jump, close out too aggressively, or lose their balance, creating an opening for a shot, drive, or pass.
How to Execute:
- Position yourself as if you are about to shoot the ball.
- Bring the ball up in a shooting motion, stopping just before the release point.
- Hold the pose for a split second, maintaining eye contact with the defender.
- If the defender reacts, capitalize on their movement by driving, shooting, or passing.
Why it Matters:
A good pump fake can disrupt the defender's timing and balance, creating scoring opportunities or opening up passing lanes. It forces the defender to play more cautiously, making them less effective.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Emphasize selling the pump fake with a realistic shooting motion.
- Teach players to read the defender's reaction and react accordingly.
- Incorporate pump fakes into shooting and driving drills.
- Encourage players to vary the height and speed of their pump fakes.
