Pick and Pop
A variation of the pick and roll where the screener steps out for a jump shot instead of rolling to the basket.
The pick and pop is a variation of the pick and roll. Instead of rolling to the basket after setting the screen, the screener "pops" out to the perimeter for a jump shot.
When to Use It
The pick and pop is most effective when the screener is a capable shooter. If the defense focuses on the ball handler or drops back to protect the rim, the screener can step into an open mid-range or three-point shot.
Pick and Pop vs. Pick and Roll
The choice between roll and pop depends on the screener's skill set and the defense's tendencies. Against a defense that drops back to protect the paint, the pop can be devastating. Against a defense that switches or hedges aggressively, the roll may create easier opportunities at the rim.
Coaching Points
The screener must read the defense after setting the screen. If their defender helps on the ball handler, they pop. If their defender stays home, the ball handler uses the screen for their own advantage. This read-and-react element is what makes the play so effective.
