Points Per Game (PPG)
A player's average points scored each game, reflecting their scoring contribution and offensive impact during games played.
Points Per Game (PPG)
Points Per Game, or PPG, is a fundamental statistic that measures a player's average scoring output per game. It's a straightforward indicator of a player's offensive contribution. A higher PPG generally indicates a more prolific scorer, while a lower PPG suggests a smaller scoring role.
Calculation: PPG = Total Points Scored / Number of Games Played
Why it Matters: PPG helps coaches quickly assess a player's scoring ability and overall offensive value. It's useful for identifying primary scoring options, understanding a player's scoring consistency, and comparing players' offensive performance. However, PPG should be considered alongside other stats for a more complete evaluation. For instance, a player with a high PPG but low efficiency might not be as valuable as a player with a slightly lower PPG but much higher efficiency.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Identify primary scoring threats on your team and the opponent's team.
- Track player development by monitoring PPG trends over time.
- Inform game planning by focusing defensive strategies on high-PPG players.
- Evaluate player performance in different game situations. A player may score fewer points against a stronger defensive team. Consider per-minute stats if playing time varies greatly.
