Post Up

An offensive tactic where a player establishes position near the basket, typically with their back to the defender, to receive a pass.

Post Up

A post up is an offensive strategy where a player, typically a taller or stronger player, positions themselves inside the free throw lane, close to the basket, with their back to the defender. The goal is to receive a pass and score using low-post moves.

How it Works:

  1. Establishing Position: The player works to get inside position, often using their body to shield the defender and create space.
  2. Calling for the Ball: The player signals for the ball, indicating their readiness to receive a pass.
  3. Receiving the Pass: A teammate passes the ball to the player in the post.
  4. Post Moves: The player uses a variety of post moves, such as drop steps, hook shots, and fadeaways, to score against the defender.

Why it Matters:

  • Creates Scoring Opportunities: Post-ups can create easy scoring opportunities near the basket.
  • Draws Fouls: Aggressive post play can draw fouls, putting the opposing team in foul trouble.
  • Inside-Outside Game: Post-ups can create opportunities for perimeter players if the defense collapses.

How Coaches Can Use It:

  • Identify Strong Post Players: Determine which players on your team are best suited for posting up based on their size, strength, and post moves.
  • Teach Proper Positioning: Emphasize the importance of proper positioning to create space and establish a strong base.
  • Develop Post Moves: Teach a variety of post moves to keep defenders guessing and prevent them from anticipating their actions.
  • Practice Passing to the Post: Work on accurate and timely passing to the post player.
