Ball Handler
The player who dribbles and controls the basketball, typically the point guard.
The ball handler is the player responsible for advancing the basketball up the court and initiating the offense. While the point guard is the primary ball handler on most teams, modern basketball often features multiple players who can handle the ball.
Ball Handling Skills
Effective ball handling requires proficiency in several areas: dribbling with both hands, protecting the ball from defenders, changing speed and direction, and making decisions under pressure. These skills develop through repetitive practice.
Primary vs. Secondary Ball Handlers
The primary ball handler (usually the point guard) brings the ball up the court and calls plays. Secondary ball handlers are wing or forward players who can also dribble, pass, and create plays. Having multiple ball handlers makes an offense more versatile and harder to defend.
Ball Handling in the Pick and Roll
The ball handler's ability to read the defense after using a screen is what makes the pick and roll effective. They need to decide quickly whether to shoot, drive, pass to the roller, or kick to an open teammate.
Evaluating Ball Handlers
Stats like assist-to-turnover ratio, turnovers per game, and passes that lead to assists help quantify a ball handler's effectiveness. Film review adds context that statistics alone cannot provide, showing whether a player reads the defense well and makes the right decisions.
