Overhead Pass
The overhead pass is a two-handed pass thrown from above the head, primarily used for long-distance passes, initiating fast breaks, or passing over defenders. It provides power and elevation, allowing for quick and efficient ball movement down the court.
How to Execute:
- Hold the ball with both hands above your head, fingers spread comfortably behind the ball, elbows slightly bent.
- Step towards your target with one foot, bringing the ball slightly behind your head.
- Extend your arms forward and snap your wrists, releasing the ball with force and accuracy.
- Follow through with your arms, pointing your fingers towards your target.
Why it Matters:
The overhead pass enables players to quickly advance the ball down the court, bypassing defenders and initiating fast-break opportunities. It is also useful for passing over taller defenders or delivering the ball to a teammate posting up inside.
How Coaches Can Use It:
- Teach players the proper grip and release point for optimal power and accuracy.
- Emphasize stepping towards the target for improved balance and control.
- Incorporate passing drills that focus on long-distance passes and fast-break transitions.
- Encourage players to use the overhead pass when initiating fast breaks or passing to post players.
