True Shooting Percentage (TS%)

A shooting efficiency metric that includes two-pointers, three-pointers, and free throws.

True Shooting Percentage (TS%) is the most comprehensive single measure of scoring efficiency. It factors in two-point field goals, three-point field goals, and free throws into one number.

How to Calculate TS%

TS% = Points / (2 x (FGA + 0.44 x FTA)) x 100

The 0.44 multiplier for free throw attempts is used because not every free throw attempt costs a full possession (and-ones, technical foul shots, three-shot fouls all affect this).

What Is a Good TS%?

In the NBA, the league average is typically around 56-57%. For youth basketball, this number will naturally be lower. The value of TS% is in comparing players to each other and tracking individual improvement over a season.

When to Use TS%

TS% is particularly useful for evaluating players who get to the free throw line frequently. A player with a modest FG% but who draws many fouls and converts free throws at a high rate may have an excellent TS%. This stat helps coaches see the full picture of a player's scoring contributions.
