Field Goal Percentage (FG%)
The ratio of successful field goals to total attempts, expressed as a percentage.
Field Goal Percentage (FG%) measures shooting accuracy by dividing the number of made field goals by the number of attempted field goals.
How to Calculate FG%
FG% = (Field Goals Made / Field Goals Attempted) x 100
For example, if a player makes 7 out of 15 shot attempts, their FG% is 46.7%.
What FG% Includes
FG% counts all two-point and three-point field goal attempts. It does not include free throws. This means a player who takes mostly layups will typically have a higher FG% than a player who takes many three-pointers.
What Is a Good FG%?
At the NBA level, the league average hovers around 46%. For youth basketball, expectations should be adjusted based on age and skill level. A U14 team shooting 35-40% from the field is performing reasonably well. The key is to track trends over time rather than fixating on a single number.
Why FG% Matters for Coaches
Tracking FG% helps coaches understand which players are efficient scorers and which shot types produce the best results for their team. By reviewing FG% alongside shot location data, coaches can design plays that create higher-percentage opportunities.
