Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%)

An adjusted shooting percentage that accounts for the extra value of three-point shots.

Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) adjusts standard field goal percentage to reflect the fact that three-point field goals are worth 50% more than two-point field goals.

How to Calculate eFG%

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 x 3PM) / FGA x 100

For example, a player who goes 4-for-10 from the field with two of those makes being threes: eFG% = (4 + 0.5 x 2) / 10 = 50%.

Why eFG% Is More Useful Than FG%

Standard FG% treats all made shots equally. But a player who makes 4 out of 10 three-pointers (12 points) is producing more value than a player who makes 4 out of 10 two-pointers (8 points), even though both have a 40% FG%. eFG% captures this difference.

How Coaches Can Use eFG%

eFG% helps coaches evaluate their team's shot selection. If a team has a high FG% but low eFG%, it may mean they are not taking enough three-pointers or not getting good looks from beyond the arc. Comparing eFG% across different lineups or game situations can reveal which combinations produce the most efficient offense.
