Three-Point Percentage (3P%)

Three-Point Percentage (3P%) measures how accurately a player shoots from beyond the three-point arc.

How to Calculate

3P% = Three-Point Field Goals Made / Three-Point Field Goals Attempted x 100

What Is a Good 3P%?

At the professional level, a 3P% above 36% is considered solid, and above 40% is excellent. For youth basketball, three-point shooting develops later than other skills, so coaches should set age-appropriate expectations. At the U14 level, consistent attempts from three-point range with gradual improvement in accuracy is a positive sign.

Volume vs. Accuracy

A player shooting 50% on 2 three-point attempts per game is not necessarily a better shooter than one shooting 35% on 8 attempts. Both the percentage and the volume of attempts matter when evaluating a player's three-point shooting.

Coaching Considerations

Track which players should and should not be taking three-point shots based on their percentages over time. Use this data to design offensive sets that get the ball to your best shooters in their preferred spots on the floor.
